The road to residency #1 Oct 5, 2006

Jason turned in his application for residency in family medicine on Oct 3rd. He was waiting for his seperation from the Navy to be complete, but found out it could take 90 more days. So he sent the application in faith that God was leading us out of the Navy. The very next day Jason got 2 interviews!! One to Glasgow, KY and the other to South Bend, IN. Then today he got another to Billings, MT. This is exciting stuff! but we really want to spend the next 3 years where God wishes us to be. We are wrestling with issues like:

Should we be in a more rural setting?

Should we stay in the SDA system, so that our programs are not filled with nonSDAs and nonChristians?

Should we be salt and light somewhere else?

Should we go somewhere that has high monetary benefits so we can be debt-free and in the mission field sooner?

What will Janelle do (teach biology, become a Physician Assistant)?

We are seriously considering staying in Loma Linda, but it would be a HUGE monetary sacrifice if we did so. Not just that the pay is lower, but also the cost of living is really high, and we found a program in ID where Janelle could go to PA school with free tuition!

If you are reading this, please say a prayer that God would lead us in this big decision. And any advice is much appreciated, thanks =)

Kpl's 2 cents off the cuff advice!
1)Rural is always better than city. But city can be a blessing to, mostly you being a blessing to others, versus the city blessing you.
2) You can (should) be light and salt anywhere. And you guys, ah you are doing that already so I think you got that one covered
3)Never has God used debt to bless his people or finance his cause in the Bible. (Bible Scholars am I ok on that?) Is debt a sin? No not nessecarily, but Bible does say that debtor is slave to the lender. I struggle with this too, pay bills of first or do to the work first. I have talked to alot of people and heard both sides. Haven't made up my mind completely yet. But just think of what kind of peace of mind, and position it would put you in to give if you were debt free. And something just is happens to debt free people they just seemed released to be more creative spiritually and otherwise when they are debt free. (Good book to read is "Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey" its at the Loma Linda Public Library.)
4)What should Janelle do? Teach bio is ok, PA is great. But how about that grandest of all careers stay-at-home-mom. Yeah I said career. Don't let anyone tell you that ain't a proper career. Staying home and taking proper care and feeding of your hubby, holding his arms up in his ministry as a physician is a beautiful thing. Also hey if you have kiddos that changes everything. (A good book to read is "Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" by Dr. Laura Schlessinger. At the library too, but you can borrow it from me if you like.)

Bottom line I know God will lead you and that you are the kind of people that in tune with Him. So work with Him he will open the doors.
Peace out!

Praying for you folks' big decisions ahead!! South Bend is a nice, reasonably-sized town. (You can get pretty rural around there, don't worry.) It's a mission field for sure. Notre Dame is right there. And Andrews is 40 minutes away. You could even drive to my church if you wanted!

Since I heard there were no interviews in Sacramento, I'm voting for LLU. I know for sure that God will lead and your faith will grow, maybe more than you wanted it to!-) Praying for the trip to India.

I will be praying for you about this decision. It is a difficult one, indeed. =) God will open and close doors. In HIS time.
